This module aims to introduce and familiarize students with some of the key issues, resources and current practices in Foreign Language Teaching (FLT) and Learning (FLL). The course is aimed at students who are attracted by a career in foreign language teaching as well as students who want to know more about the processes of foreign language learning. It can be taken either as a follow up to Introduction to IT319 or independently (in this case students should nevertheless have acquired basic knowledge of linguistics and language teaching methodology in the course of their studies and must seek approval from the module tutor).

Topics covered typically include: needs analysis and motivation; curriculum, course and lesson design; classroom methodology and the design of learning aids; learning strategies; assessment methods. Additional topics will be negotiated with the group at the start of the module. Typical subjects can include: macro- and micro-skills; languages for specific purposes; translation as a skill. By focusing on specific aspects of language teaching methodology, the module will allow students to understand the way in which theoretical perspectives, methods and approaches are connected to teaching practice and learning outcomes, and also to familiarize themselves with the key phases and components which make up the FLT/FLL process.

Assessment Method:

Either one assessed essay of 2,500 words (50%) and one 1-hour exam (50%) in June, or one assessed essay + portfolio of materials of 5,000 words (100%)
