Le preposizioni italiane

This page has the purpose of helping you learn Italian prepositions in context. There are very few rules that can help you predict what preposition to use: for instance, you use "in" with countries (or at least, with feminine countries) but "a" with cities. Apart from that, you simply need to practice using the correct preposition in the various contexts.

Here are four worksheets with sentences in English that have been especially prepared with specific Italian sentences in mind. The textual element that corresponds to a preposition in Italian has been highlighted in grey. You can practice translating the full sentence back into Italian, or just working out what the Italian preposition will be. These sentences are presented here in random order (alphabetical) and each sheet includes sentences from each of the main Italian prepositions. You can find the Italian sentences listed under the appropriate preposition in the section below. This means that in order to complete and check each worksheet, you will need to go through all the Italian preposition sheets below.
