Module description

Do you need to consolidate and expand grammar topics while enjoying talking about Italian culture and society? If so, this is the right module for you. This module is designed to revise your grammar, broaden your vocabulary and increase your confidence in spoken and written production. It is also designed to introduce you to slightly more complex grammar topics and the practice of translation. Cultural topics and elements of grammar will be integrated regularly and productively. You will be provided with the opportunity to delve into cultural topics including tourism, the Arts, environmental issues, migration, Italy in a European context and Italian traditions. The module will also offer you the opportunity to work on reception and production of different texts types and genres. By the end of it, you will be able to write different texts while using appropriate language structures, register, style and terminology. In-class activities will include individual and group presentations, videos, listening and vocabulary exercises. You will benefit from your language tutor’s feedback and you will be encouraged to engage with various activities specifically designed to integrate the four language skills – listening, reading, writing and speaking.

Assessment

End of term 1 Language Test: 10%

End of term 2 portfolio (1,500 words): 20%

Term 3 Oral Exam (presentation): 20%

Term 3 Summer paper (3hr): 50%. The exam consists of three questions: a summary of an Italian text in Italian; a translation of an Italian text into English; an essay in Italian.

Failure to attend a class test or submit required assessed work will result in a mark of 0 being recorded for that part of the assessment. It is normally not possible to submit assessed work or retake the test at a later date. However, if your absence is a result of medical or personal circumstances then you may be permitted to take the test at the next opportunity provided that you (i) notify the relevant module tutor as soon as possible and (ii) provide a medical certificate or other supporting documentation.
