Themes to be addressed:

  • Italy as a theatre of war

  • The papacy at war: diplomatic and political implications

  • The cultural role of Rome and the papacy

  • The impact of the French and Spanish occupations on society, culture and political life in Italy

  • The role of the wars in the diffusion of Italian influences in Europe

Speakers will include: David Abulafia (Cambridge); David Chambers (Warburg Institute, London); Giorigio Chittolini (Milan); Iain Fenlon (Cambridge); George Gorse (Pomona); George Holmes (Oxford); John Law (Swansea); Michael Mallett (Warwick); John Najemy (Cornell); Alessandro Nova (Frankfurt); William Prizer (Santa Barbara).

Some bursaries, funded by the Society for Renaissance Studies, will be available to postgraduates making communications at the conference.
