Visiting students are expected to take 60 CATS of modules per term. You should choose at least 75% of your modules from the Liberal Arts department. You may take modules from other departments, subject to availability with the department.
Our course is constructed around “Problem-Based-Learning” (PBL). This means that you learn about a subject through problem-solving. You examine a problem from a variety of disciplinary perspectives including the social, political, scientific and historic, and learn how to use a range of analytical tools to explore the issues and evaluate the different approaches.
Liberal Arts modules are typically arranged around weekly two-hour workshops that are mandatory, but there will be a range of other mandatory and optional events associated with particular modules: film screenings, research seminars, student-led discussion groups, and tutor office hours. This means that most of your time will be spent out of the classroom; you are expected to read, explore, and discuss with your peers and tutors outside of formally timetabled sessions.
We operate in three ten-week terms (October to December; January to March; April to June). The first two mainly consist of teaching and essay-writing, while the third is mainly concerned with the completion of assessed essays and examinations. Are we allowing part-year applications??
We have devised an assessment strategy that allows students to develop their expertise in addressing problems using a variety of perspectives from the Arts, Sciences and Social Sciences. We teach students to use quantitative and qualitative methods of research, and this equips them with a solid foundation from which they can approach contemporary problems critically and creatively. Consequently, the range of assessments on this degree combines the traditional (essays and written examinations) with the innovative (creative projects, portfolios and performance).
