My work critically explores the links between creative production, sustainable cultures and cultural policy and I teach modules on sustainable creative processes and on the role of the arts in community development projects. I have been chair of the Creative and Cultural Industries track and the Organisational Psychology track for the British Academy of Management and previously acted as co-editor of the Journal of Critical Realism. I have advised on the development of creative potential and sustainable practices within public, private and charitable organisations.

Research

My research projects have included: understanding the nature of creativity; the role of discovery within creative processes; developing sustainable creative practices and cultures; critically exploring creative practices within enterprising cultures; the influence of digital social media technologies on creativity; the gender, race and class barriers experienced within digital and creative work; enterprising or entrepreneurial behaviour; philosopy of science and applied social research; understanding creative and cultural freedom.

Recent publications include the Palgrave Handbook of Creativity at Work (Palgrave MacMillan, 2018) and Defining Creativity with Discovery (Creativity Research Journal, 2017).

Teaching and supervision

I teach two modules within the Centre for Cultural and Media Policy Studies: Arts, Community and Enterprise; and Sustainable Creativity for the Cultural Industries. I supervise doctoral students interested in topics related to: creativity; sustainability; creativity and human development; creativity and management; critical realism; cultural entrepreneurship and enterprise; and critical theory and culture. Previous students have explored: creativity at work; digital and social media practices; digital technologies and creative enterprises; the recognition of creative work; and the barriers to creativity and enterprise, especially those related to gender, class and race.
