This module provides an overview of significant theatre practice in western theatre in the twentieth century. It explores the increasing power of the director in relation to interpretation, staging and acting. A particular emphasis will be placed on the ideological implications of the theory and practice of the directors considered. The module will therefore engage with the social and contextual aspects of acting, the nature of the actor audience relationship, experimental use of stage space and theatre as a form of political intervention. It will be taught on Mondays 11 – 1.
