TH227 Performing Masculinities
This module will focus on the performance of a range of masculinities. We will examine how masculinities are constructed, maintained and challenged through a range of texts and performances. The module will analyse the intersection of masculinities with a range of other concepts such as class, ethnicity and age. The module will also explore how a variety of institutions – the workplace, school, the military and sport – influence the ways that masculinities are performed on stage and in everyday life.

By the end of the module, students should be able to:

  • Discuss the ways in which late twentieth century and twenty-first century performance artists, theatre practitioners and playwrights have represented the performance of masculinities
  • Identify key themes and strategies employed by playwrights and practitioners to explore the idea of what it means to be a ‘man’.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of how key conceptual frameworks can inform the creation and analysis of contemporary theatre/performance.
  • Analyse a wide range of plays and performances paying attention to the study of masculinities in particular and gender in general within historical and cultural contexts. Engage in research-based investigation of appropriate primary and secondary source material.
  • Communicate what they have learnt both orally and in writing.
