WIHEA Masterclass - Mental Wellbeing in Higher Education: the challenges for academic staff

- Export as iCalendar
Location: Experimental Teaching Space, Teaching Grid, The Library

In partnership with IATL and delivered by Dr Ruth Caleb, Head of Counselling, Brunel University London

Student mental health is a major concern for all universities in terms of the student experience, retention and progression. This Masterclass will provide an opportunity to discuss student mental health and wellbeing, including the national context and the challenges that this issue presents for academic staff. It would be helpful if attendees bring along any cases of student mental ill health or wellbeing that they would like to discuss.

Ruth has over 30 years' experience as a counsellor and psychotherapist in a wide variety of settings including pregnancy and fertility counselling, National Aids Helpline, ChildLine, and private practice. For the last 25 years, she has specialised in university counselling and for the past seventeen years was the Head of Counselling at Brunel University London. She has now taken up a part-time role as Wellbeing Consultant and welcomed opportunities to work on behalf of Brunel University London strategically at a national level. She is Chair of the Mental Wellbeing in Higher Education (MWBHE) Working Group, which is partnered by Universities UK / GuildHE, and she is a member of the Universities UK Mental Health in HE programme steering group. Previously she was a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) International Research Committee from 2003 to 2006 and was Chair of BACP Universities and Colleges (a BACP Expert Division) from 2008 to 2010.

She is frequently consulted about mental health and wellbeing in organisations, both nationally and internationally. She has taken part in media discussions, and written newspaper and journal articles and book chapters on the subject of student mental health and wellbeing. She is currently co-editing a book on student mental wellbeing.
