Thesis Topic : The politics of transparency in network culture.

Abstract :

Transparency is increasingly becoming a “matter of concern” across a number of domains and disciplines, turning into a central subject in a variety of contexts; as publics and users, we assist to perpetual calls for increased transparency, for example in the way that online platforms handle and act on the data generated by users. However, transparency is also a political and policy-making issue; governments acts are criticised for their lack of data transparency, while others seek to proactively integrate transparency as an operating principle (UK gov, french gov). The project aims is to investigate the uses of transparency and the meaning the concept acquires across multiple contexts (arts and design, digital culture and politics). Specifically, it aims to understand the mechanisms through which a politics of transparency is enacted in different situations. This research project will therefore develop around three areas: an archaeology of transparency; a study of the mechanisms through which transparency is mobilised in design and technology, specifically in relation to interfaces (i.e. ‘transparent interfaces’); and lastly, a third sub-project which proposes a number of experimental proposals for how transparency might be reconceived.
