We are pleased to announce that the recent bid for funding for a new Centre for Docotral Training in Mathematics of Real-World Systems has been successful. The Centre will be funded by the EPSRC, BBSRC, and will also be able to boast strong connections and in some cases additional funding from external collaborators. The first students to join the Centre will start on its 1+3 MSc+PhD Programme in September 2014. Applications for Autumn 2013 entry to the Erasmus Mundus Masters in Complex Systems Science closed on the 7th January 2013. We expect to be able to contact applcants regarding initial outcomes of thier applications by early March 2013. Applications for study starting in 2014 will open in late Summer 2013.

The Cente for Complexity Science is pleased to announce that Dr Ben Graham has been appointed Assistant Professor in Statistics and Complexity and will be joining the Centre on the 1st July 2013. His areas of expertise include Probability Theory and Machine Learning.

Dr Charo del Genio joins the Centre as a Warwick Zeeman Lecturer in Mathematics and Complexity Science for 3 years. His research interests focus on network science.

Two Warwick PhD students, Samuel Brand (Complexity Centre) and Mikolaj Sierzega (Mathematics) have won EPSRC Doctoral Prize Fellowships for 2012–13.

Samuel Brand, whose thesis is titled “Spatial and Stochastic Epidemics: Theory, Simulation and Control” will work on “New Mathematical Methods for Optimal Control of Epidemics” with Michael Tildesley.

Mikolaj Sierzega, whose thesis is titled “Topics in the theory of semilinear heat equations” will work on “Classical solutions to semilinear parabolic equations” with Jose Rodrigo.

Robert MacKay has received a 5-year Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award to develop mathematics to understand, predict, control and design complex systems, with a particular emphasis on their statistical behaviour.

Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Awards scheme provides universities with additional support to enable them to recruit or retain respected scientists of outstanding achievement and potential to the UK. The scheme is jointly funded by the Wolfson Foundation and the Royal Society.

Wednesday the 18th of July 2012 saw the first PhD Graduates from the Centre of Complexity Science be awarded their PhDs at the University of Warwick Graduation Ceremony.
