A guide to using literary sources to enrich and contextualise the teaching of history. Literary sources provide us with a fascinating and tantalising blend of facts, perceptions and inventions that offer considerable opportunities to test and explore our ideas about societies and cultures. This guide hopes to open out potential areas of discussion and debate for history students and their teachers, indicating possible sources for discussion as well as secondary reading on given subjects. The texts here are among the better-known works of their period, and have attracted significant attention from historians. This guide is a work in progress. Comments and suggestions are welcome, and may be incorporated in future possible revised editions.
