Research Interests

Professor Kirstie Haywood (DPhil, BSc(Hons) Physiotherapy, PGCert LaTHE, MCSP, SRP) is a Professor of Health Outcomes, Warwick Medical School. Kirstie has established an international reputation for her research in applied health outcomes research, specially, patient-reported outcomes (PRO), measurement science and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) research in clinical trials and clinical practice settings. Throughout her research she has sought to work closely with patients and the public as research partners. Her research has included: quantitative (specifically, of outcome measurement instruments) and qualitative systematic reviews; survey research; core outcome set development (including approaches towards consensus development); randomised controlled trials and feasibility studies (including intervention development and evaluation); qualitative methodologies; and mixed methods - including the development and evaluation (psychometric and qualitative evaluation) of outcome measurement instruments. Current research studies include: 1) NIHR RfPB (Tier 2): CARESSf ? Cardiac Arrest Recovery Enablement and Supported Self-management feasibility study (Chief Investigator). £255k for 30-months until April 2025. 2) Warwick International Collaboration Award ? Developing PPIE in Resuscitation Research (Chief Investigator). Supporting international collaborative with Prof Katie Dainty, University of Toronto, Canada. 12-months until August 2024. 3) NIHR RfPB (Tier 1): Exploring the experience of children who have provided cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the impact of CPR training. PI: Dr Claire Hawkes (KCL); Co-applicant. £150k for 24-months until October 2025. 4) Resuscitation Council UK (RCUK): SURVIVORS ? developing a patient reported outcome measure for survivors of cardiac arrest (Chief Investigator). £20k for 36-months (to support doctoral programme) until October 2025 5) Warwick Collaborative Research Partnership Scholarship (WCRPS): Developing a survivor-reported outcome measure following cardiac arrest. Supporting full-time doctoral student. Collaboration with University Hospitals Birmingham (Prof Gavin Perkins). £70k for 42-months. 6) NIHR RfPB (Tier 1): WASTEd ? Measuring fatigue in Axial Spondyloarthritis (axSpA): refinement, application, and evaluation of a new electronic patient-reported outcome measure (the Warwick Axial Spondyloarthritis Fatigue and Energy questionnaire (e-WASTEd)) in rheumatology clinical practice. (Chief Investigator). £150k for 24-months until July 2024. 7) AO Foundation: COSTA2: Finalising a Core Outcome Set for fractures of the distal Tibia and Ankle. £140k for 16-months until August 2025. 8) British Society of Rheumatology (BSR) Fellowship ? The FASTER Study: PI: Jame Prior (Keele University); Co-applicant. £56k for 18-months until December 2024 9) University of Warwick ? Enhancing Research Culture Grant (Research England): Enhancing WMS's Research Culture ? implementing a community co-produced roadmap (Co-Chief Investigator (Researcher/Research Enabler Collaboration)). £43k for 12-months until July 2024 10) University of Warwick ? Enhancing Research Culture Grant (Research England): The Beacon Academy ? creating clinical academic excellence through celebrating and supporting widening participation. Biography

People, Environment and Culture: Kirstie was recently appointed as the first deputy Pro-Dean Education for WMS (December 2023). She has chaired WMS Athena SWAN activities since 2019, leading the successful Silver submission in 2019 (Athena SWAN and Equality, Diversity and Inclusion at WMS (warwick.ac.uk)) and the Silver renewal application for 2025. She was awarded the University's 'Excellence in Gender Equality' (individual award) in 2022 5 questions with Kirstie Haywood, Individual Award for Excellence in Gender Equality 2022 winner (warwick.ac.uk). She is a member of the University's Athena SWAN self-assessment team, chairing the 'Advancing and Supporting Careers' sub-group; the university was recently awarded a Silver renewal (January 2024). She is the WMS representative to the Science, Engineering and Medicine (SEM) faculty EDI forum. She has led a community-focused programme of work at WMS, informing the co-production of a 'research culture roadmap' and action plan (Research Culture (warwick.ac.uk)), encouraging and supporting staff and staff-student collaborative initiatives in this space (for example, the WMS Beacon Internships Beacon Internships ? The Beacon Academy), the appointment of WMS's first 'Research Culture' office, and the establishment of a research culture community of practice. She is a senior academic advisor to the University's Research Culture forum. Education: Kirstie has supervised more than 20 doctoral or M-level students, two MBChB 'Beacon' interns, and 18 MBChB students (Student Self-Selected Component (SSC2)). Since 2020 I have acted as deputy to WMS's MBChB Phase 2 lead, leading both the Advanced Cases (AC1) Block (2019-2023) and SSC2 Block (2022-2023). Between 2019-2020 I was theme co-lead for 'Sociological and Population Perspectives on Health' (Soc lead), delivered across all year groups on the MBChB. She has been a member of the WMS Education Committee since 2021. She was also a member of the European Resuscitation Council post-resuscitation care guidelines writing group (2016; 2020/2021) ERC Guidelines (cprguidelines.eu). She is chair and co-founder of the Cardiac Arrest Recovery and Survivorship (CARS) working group, an international group of cardiac arrest survivors, their key supporters, healthcare professionals, and researchers, contributing to the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation activities. Health Outcomes Research (selected activities) Consensus-based Standards for the Selection of health Measurement Instruments (COSMIN): - PRISMA-COSMIN: She has recently participated in an international Delphi study, consensus meeting, and writing group, supporting the development of an extension of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) 2020 guidelines for reviews of outcome measurement instruments (OMIs): the PRISMA-COSMIN (Consensus-based Standards for the Selection of health Measurement Instruments). Guideline for Systematic Reviews of Outcome Measurement Instruments ? COSMIN - She has contributed to numerous COSMIN initiatives as a Delphi participant (including, for example, guidance on content validity COSMIN methodology for evaluating the content validity of patient-reported outcome measures: a Delphi study - PMC (nih.gov)) and reviewer/ writing group member (for example, a recent review of review quality). SPIRIT-PRO Extension: A member of the SPIRIT-PRO taskforce and writing group (ISOQOL), she contributed to the development of international guidelines for the inclusion of patient-reported outcome measures in clinical trial protocols. She co-founded and chaired ISOQOL's Patient Engagment Special Interest Group (2014-2316) and has co-chaired the Clinical Practice SIG (2011-2014). Editorial activities: She is an associate editor and board member for several journals, including: Resuscitation (2014 - ), The Patient: Patient-Centred Outcomes Research (2013 - ), and Quality of Life Research (2018). She is a member of the international advisory committee for the Journal of Patient-Reported Outcomes (2017-).
