CONSTRUIT Schools Workshops 14th-15th July 2017

The CONSTRUIT Schools Workshops are events for teachers and students to be held in Computer Science at the University of Warwick on Friday 14th July and Saturday 15th July respectively. Both the Student event and Teacher event are strands within a 4-day conference called CONSTRUIT 2017 on the theme of Making, Thinking and Learning in the Digital Age. This final event in a 3-year EU Project (CONSTRUIT!) features a new practice we call 'making construals', well-suited to developing open educational resources on a wide range of topics, that has been trialled by teachers and students in Finland and Greece.

Teacher Event

Friday 14th July

09.00 - 18.00

This one-day event offers a blend of talks and workshops that illustrate how making activities can support learning in a variety of different subjects at both primary and secondary level. There will be an invited presentation on 'Making for Teachers' from Daniel K. Schneider (TECFA, University of Geneva), a variety of round-robin workshops on themes such as modelling and 3D printing, programming, the internal combustion engine and music that illustrate "making for learning" using several different approaches, and talks recounting experience of making and teaching in Finland, Greece and the UK. The final session will be a presentation from Richard Windle (HELM, Nottingham) devoted to open educational resources for medicine. Full details of the programme for the day can be found here.

Registration and further information

The Teacher workshop sessions are free and - while we have spaces - open to anyone interested (lunch and refreshments are only available to those who prebooked and paid prior to 9th July). If you plan to attend, please enter your details via the online form at:

so that we have a full record of attendees and can monitor overall numbers.

Student Event

Saturday 15th July

10.15-12.00, 13.15-15.00 and 15.45-17.30

This workshop illustrates the potential for 'making construals' as a way of developing open educational resources for schools: it will comprise an introductory tutorial devoted to 'modelling the solar system' and a showcase featuring construals of games, Arduino, the internal combustion engine, and musical instruments.

Registration and further information

The workshop lasts 1 hour 45 minutes (including refreshment break) and is FREE but admission is strictly by online registration only. Students must be 14 years old or over on 15th July 2017. The number of students is limited to 15 for each workshop and the same workshop is being offered at 10.15, 13.15 and 15.45. Parents and/or teachers are welcome to accompany students and attend the workshop as observers.

Students should register themselves by completing a form which will be made available from Wednesday 5th July at 12 noon via this link. They should enter their information as requested and choose a workshop at any time available. We shall send them email confirming it. They must then send us email accepting the offer (which may - if their chosen time is no longer available - not be at the time they originally requested!). Having had their place confirmed we ask them to download a simple parental permission form (if they are under 18) to get signed and bring with them.

A convenient location for dropping off and collecting by car is the Sports Centre car park - see the campus maps in interactive and printable versions.
