PX908: Biomedical Optics and Applications

The principal module aims are:

To provide students with a basic understanding of biomedical optical imaging and spectroscopy:

  • introduction to optical microscopy (wide-field, confocal, fluorescence ..)
  • advanced optical microscopy (high-speed, super resolution, tomography …)
  • tissue optics (absorption, scattering, spectrscopy, physiology)
  • imaging in biological tissue (OCT, multiphoton, diffuse tomography
  • clinical optical imaging and metrology
  • probes for optical imaging

To provide students with a basic understanding of the potential biomedical applications of diamond:

  • nanodiamond and nanocarbon particles for bio-labelling, drug delivery and the seeds for nanocrystalline diamond growth
  • the application of diamond at the bio-inorganic interface
  • the functionalization and surface modification of ND particles for biomedical applications
