FIRE PROCEDURE

 

The fire alarm is indicated by a continuous Two Tone Sound and is tested every Thursday morning.

Fire drills may be notified beforehand by notices on building entrances, but otherwise will be scheduled each term.

Action in the Event of a Fire Alarm

Leave the building as quickly and orderly as possible, do not collect belongings and do not run, proceed to the assembly area.

Action to take in discovering a FIRE

Raise the alarm, shout ‘Fire!’ and activate the nearest fire alarm call point.

If safe to do so, shut down any machinery/equipment that you are using, close windows and any doors.

Evacuate the building via the nearest exit following the directional fire exit signage to your nearest designated assembly point.

Call Security on x22222 from a landline or (024765 22222 from a mobile phone) and state:

• The place of the fire
• Any casualties
• Your name

Fire Wardens

Throughout the school, there are designated Fire Wardens. Fire Wardens are responsible for checking areas and ensuring the building is clear, they will liaise with University Security and report to the Fire Evacuation Officer when the area has been checked and announced as clear.

9. Persons who need assistance

The University has produced some guidance that covers Emergency Escape from buildings for Disabled Persons which advises persons who need assistance to utilise an Independence Assessment Tool which is accessible from the linked page. This may require a Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan to be developed in consultation with the Departmental Disability Coordinator and Health and Safety Advisor for those that require additional support. All of the latest guidance is available from the link given and the information below can be used to support a personal assessment of needs when working or studying in the School of Engineering:

In the School of Engineering, the F Block has three disabled refuges or 'safe havens' where persons can take themselves to a fire-protected stairwell if unable to evacuate horizontally or out of the building:

• located at the rear of F211 (through the Computer Suite) and through the emergency exit door (note that horizontal evacuation would be a more preferable option from this floor if permissible)
• through the fire exit door at the end of the third-floor corridor
• through the fire exit door at the end of the fourth-floor corridor

There is ramped access to the second and third-floor areas which should permit a wheelchair user to egress once the door is opened. The F211 door will unlock only when the alarms are sounding. Support will be required for wheelchair users to access both areas as neither door is fitted with an automatic opener. The fourth-floor refuge is not fitted with a ramp. Support of a colleague or member of staff will likely to be needed to egress to all of these refuge areas. This should also ensure that the person/s location is indicated to the Evacuation Supervisor or member of Security (in case of a need to assistance to evacuate).

Horizontal evacuation is possible from the Second Floor A Block corridor into the Chemistry foyer area - this leads to the link bridge over to the Library.

Egress is possible from the First Floor Engineering entrance area to the outside. If waiting in this area, persons should ensure that they do not restrict others egressing from this area to ensure everyone's safety.

Doors on the ground floor that are not normally open will unlock when the fire alarm sounds, permitting egress from any door on this floor. All persons including those who need assistance should use the nearest exit by following the Fire Exit signage.

It is recommended that persons who may potentially require assistance make themselves familiar with the buildings in which they are working/studying. Any issues or concerns should be brought to the attention of the relevant Departmental Disability Coordinator and/or Health and Safety Advisor as appropriate.
