The Challenge

The Warwick Submarine team competes in two international competitions that alternate every year; the International Submarine Races (ISR) and the European International Submarine Races (eISR). Both of these competitions involve designing, manufacturing, and racing a human-powered submarine in an underwater drag race, competing against other top class university teams from around the world. For the 2022/23 academic year, the project's focus is on the ISR 17 competition in June 2023.

The International Submarine Races is hosted by the US Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC), Carderock Division, and sponsored by the Foundation for Underwater Research & Education (FURE). Having run for more than 30 years now, the competition takes place biennially in Maryland, USA. The purpose of the competition is to provide valuable experiences to STEM students around the world, and therefore fulfil industry and national needs for such research areas related to marine engineering. The ISR website can be accessed here: https://internationalsubmarineraces.org/

The European International Submarine Races is hosted by QinetiQ and the Institute for Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST). It takes place biennially in Gosport, UK, at QinetiQ's Ocean Basin slalom course. The aim of the competition is to provide an exciting and unique sporting competition whilst improving the technical skills of university students tackling an engineering challenge. The eISR website can be accessed here: https://www.subrace.eu/
