Hybrid Atomistic-Continuum Modelling

Dr. Nikolaos Asproulis
Dept. of Engineering Physics, Cranfield University

Over the last decades, the study of micro- and nano-scale flows has attracted the scientific and industrial interest aiming to further explore the capabilities of devices operating at these scales. Applications of micro and nano-fluidic devices have benefited various disciplines across the boards spanning from nano-medicine to nano-manufacturing and environmental sciences. However, as the operational dimensions are downsized to smaller scales, traditional modelling approaches experience efficiency and accuracy limitations. Aiming to confront these limitations hybrid continuum-molecular approaches have been developed for providing a unified description across the various scales. In the current talk the main framework and applications of the hybrid methods will be discussed.
