Modelling Sound Absorption in Aircraft Engines

Aircraft engines typically include acoustic linings designed to absorb sound. Since experimental tests on aircraft engines are rather expensive, simple mathematical models have been used since the 1960s to predict the performance of these acoustic linings, and more recently numerical simulations have supplemented these. However, a fundamental problem was recently discovered with the model used for acoustic linings. This fundamental problem also has connotations for flow over any non-rigid surface.
