Tracer study at sewage treatment plant

Fluorescent tracer studies were performed at several Sewage Treatment Works to obtain discharge rates at different locations within the pipe network on site.

The intention for this specific study was to gain insight into the temporal variation of flow rates within the pipe network on site.

Constant injections of Rhodamine WT were performed at different locations and observations of fluorescence concentrations were undertaken at several locations downstream of the point of injections. Samples were analysed by means of a Field Fluorometer.

The study provided an accurate data set. It revealed the discharge rates in parallel pipes and shortcuts within the network system. Due to the flexibility of the method the flow rates were obtained at any important access point.

The survey results have been incorporated into the hydraulic model. By removing uncertainty in the system essential savings during upgrade of the Sewage Treatment Plant were achieved.
