Working with Industry

We collaborate widely with industry through directly-funded projects, levy-funded projects and schemes such as Agritech Catalyst awards, BBSRC Industrial Partnership Awards and Knowledge Transfer Partnerships to provide innovative solutions to today’s agricultural and horticultural issues, helping maintain a competitive and sustainable industry.

Examples of current partnerships

andrew_with_onions.jpgHazera Seeds and AHDB Horticulture are partners in a project on Fusarium rot in onion led by John Clarkson as part of the BBSRC Horticulture and Potatoes initiative. The main objectives are to:
1) to identify Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. cepae genes which could be used as markers to distinguish this pathogen from other F. oxysporum formae speciales or non-pathogenic isolates.
2) to identify Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. cepae resistance loci and associated genetic markers in onion for use in future breeding programmes.
3) to produce pre-breeding Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. cepae-resistant onion lines to enable the development of basal rot resistant onion cultivars for the industry.

Elsoms Seeds and BBSRC are partners in a PhD research project on root canker in parsnips. Parsnips are a speciality crop within the UK. Losses due to root canker, caused by fungal pathogens, are the major constraint to production. The project will increase understanding of the epidemiology of canker pathogens, use specific plant bioassays to identify resistant parsnip breeding lines and develop markers for mapping QTL conferring resistance. This will improve the sustainability of parsnip production in the UK.
