We are working on a new mathematical approach to data-led modelling in the context of stem cell differentiation and developmental patterning. The aim is to understand the general principles of how the signals received by cells cause them to switch from one state to another and how this process can cause the sort of spatial patterning seen in development.
The approach that will be adopted relies on using results from singularity theory and catastrophe theory to classify a rich class of dynamical systems and the bifurcations between them. These dynamical systems describe the dynamics of the interacting networks of transcription factor genes in a cell which control cell differentiation.
This year 2017 - 2018 I am teaching Introduction to Maths for MIBTP students and I am also TAing the module MA3J3: Bifurcations, Catastrophes and Symmetry for third year undergraduate students in Mathematics, both in Term 1.
