EPSRC Symposium Workshop - Disordered Media

Monday 5 - Friday 9 September 2011

Organisers: Ben Hambly (Oxford), Neil O’Connell (Warwick), Nikolaos Zygouras (Warwick)

The aim of this workshop is to consider significant recent developments in the mathematical study of disordered media. This field collects together a variety of models, mainly originating from physical sciences such as condensed matter physics, physical chemistry, and geology, where one is interested in the properties of materials which have have defects or inhomogeneities. This is a fast moving field with many new developments in random polymer models, random walk in random environment, interlacement percolation, and randomly growing surfaces, for example. It also has connections to many other areas of probability and mathematics such as random matrices, concentration inequalities, stochastic PDEs, etc. We aim to bring together leading researchers in the area with those in the UK to make progress on problems such as transport on critical clusters in two dimensions, concentration properties, and detailed path properties and fluctuations.

Some practical details

Here is advice on how to get to Warwick University from the main UK airports.

The nearest railway station to the University is Coventry Railway Station, approximately 2.5 miles away.

Here is a map of the Warwick campus (where the Mathematics Department is in the Zeeman Building, numbered 37).

Here is some information on local buses ( Unibus connect Coventry-University-Leamington Spa; 12 connects Coventry-University-Kenilworth-Leamington Spa). Kenilworth is 4 miles from the University. Leamington Spa is 8 miles from the University, and has its own railway station.

The cost of parking on Campus is £3 per day.

Lectures will be in room B3.03 in the Zeeman Building (which is suitable for blackboard, OHP or computer presentations).
