Complexity Science Summer School

Graduate Summer School - Stochastic modelling and optimisation of complex systems

Organisers: Colm Connaughton (Warwick Mathematics Institute and Centre for Complexity Science) and Emre Esenturk (Warwick Mathematics Institute)

Dates: June 9th - June 12th 2015

Location: Mathematics Institute, Zeeman building, University of Warwick

Introduction

Understanding and controlling complexity is widely recognised as an increasingly important challenge in the design and management of modern scientific, industrial and socio-technical systems. A diverse range of systems such as infrastructure networks, manufacturing supply chains, health care systems and financial markets all exhibit important collective behaviour which is difficult to understand without resort to mathematical modeling and analysis. The ability to construct and optimise such models in the presence of constraints, uncertainty and random fluctuations is a key skill which which will be required of the scientists, engineers and managers of the future. This year's Warwick Graduate Summer School in Complexity Science will provide graduate students and researchers in the mathematical sciences with an introduction to modern theoretical and computational tools for tackling the challenges posed by such modeling and optimsation problems.

Lecturers

  • Juergen Branke (Warwick Business School) - Simulation-based optimisation
  • Keith Briggs (BT Research) - Optimisation in wireless data networks
  • Misha Chertkov (Los Alamos National Laboratory) - Topics in Complex Energy (Power and Natural) Systems Modeling and Reliability
  • Patrick Lang (Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Mathematics) and Tobias Damm (Technische Universität Kaiserslautern) - System analysis and model reduction [TBC]
  • Guido Tack (Monash University) - Combinatorial optimisation and constraint programming systems
