Variational Approaches to Problems in Solid Mechanics

Monday 18th December 2017

Organiser: Thomas Hudson

Solid Mechanics and the Calculus of Variations have been intertwined branches of study since the time of Euler. This long and fruitful history continues today: in the last few decades, new mathematical developments have led to rigorous connections between microscopic and macroscopic models of solids, and the physical requirements of the theory have led to a deeper understanding of the conditions necessary for variational problems to exhibit minimisers. This workshop will bring together junior faculty members from across the UK who use the techniques of the Calculus of Variations to study models of solid materials.

This workshop is funded under the LMS “Celebrating New Appointments” scheme in celebration of the appointment of Thomas Hudson at the Mathematics Institute, University of Warwick, and by a Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowhsip, entitled "A mathematical study of Discrete Dislocation Dynamics".
