Joint DTC Team Building - Melton Mowbray 2006

3-6th April 2006

The 2004 intake of PhD students spent several days at Scalford Hall, just outside of Melton Mowbray, along with students from other EPSRC funded Doctoral Training Centres carrying out a variety of activities. These ranged from the cognitive to the physical, and were aimed at developing a range of transferable skills, such as problem solving, team work, presentation skills and business management.

Just as valuable as the organised activities and copious quantities of food served, was the opportunity to meet students from other institutions and discuss the similarities and differences between our course programmes, and possible collaborations. The tutors were also a valuable resource and had a range of backgrounds, including academic, industrial, the careers service and even the theatre.

The focus of each day was different.

- Day one was about how we manage our own work, and in particular how we deal with problems and difficulties.

- Day two was focused on interpersonal skills, personality and managing supervisor and work relationships.

- Day three was about communication, including communication with other scientists and those with no scientific background.

We didn’t miss the opportunity on the way back to stop in Melton Mowbray for the obligatory Pork Pie, which was an excellent way to round the week off.
