Outreach Work

2014

I was selected as a team leader (a volunteer position) at the Big Bang Fair which was held at the Birmingham NEC Arena in March. The Big Bang Fair is a national event which aims to interest young people in science, maths, technology and engineering. I gained experience in science communication public engagement in science, and event management.

2013

In 2013, I completed two placements with The Brilliant Club.

The Brilliant Club aim to widen access to top university for excellent pupils from low-participation backgrounds. PhD students are trained, and placed in non-selective state schools to deliver a self-designed programme of university-style tutorials. Pupils complete an extended essay at the end of the course, which is assessed by the PhD tutors.

I have completed two placements - one at KS3 (age 13-14) and one at KS5 (age 16-17). The programme I taught was entitled Smooth Muscle Cells - Excitation and Communication. The handbook I designed to accompany the course can be seen here. The handbook was supported through additional worksheets, activities and lectures.

The photo below shows me (far left) on the Graduation Day with the KS5 group I tutored.
