Project Details:

During my first two years at Warwick I developed an Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian code, capable of running in either xy or rz coordinates. The code conserves total energy to round off and has a number of additional features including a choice of two different shock viscosities, subzonal pressure, enhanced symmetry preservation and localised subzonal viscous heating. This code has gone on to form the core solver of ODIN, a multi-material, arbitrary equation of state, radiation hydrodynamics code, being developed here at Warwick and at Imperial College.

Currently my time is spent extending the core solver into an magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) ALE code. Shocks present a much more challenging problem here; they are no longer confined to compressed cells, and as such the question of shock viscosity must be revisited.

Background: Before studying at Warwick I graduated from the University of Bristol with an MSci in Physics (Upper Second Class). My final year project involved studying x-ray data of galaxy clusters from the satellite Chandra. I also spent a summer as a research student at the School of Physics and Astrophysics at the University of Nottingham.
