Research Interests:

My current research aims to investigate by means of simulation the laser-plasma instabilities that may occur in directly-driven inertial confinement fusion (ICF). These instabilities are known to contribute to a variety of undesireable effects in ICF such as preheating of the fuel and reduced laser absorption, and so I am interested in determining how big an issue this could be for a future direct-drive ignition experiment. Kinetic behaviour is often crucial in the development of these instabilities and is a focus of my project. Correctly modelling this behaviour necessitates the use of a particle-in-cell code and so my simulations are performed with the EPOCH code.
