Secretary of State views work to complete £150 million Centre that will help deliver UK Industrial Strategy

Professor Lord Bhattacharyya and Rt Hon Greg ClarkThe Rt Hon Greg Clark MP, the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, visited WMG, at the University of Warwick, on Friday 20th January 2017, taking up an invitation to see for himself the work underway to complete the new £150 million National Automotive Innovation Centre on the University Campus. He also saw the work expanding WMG’s Energy Innovation Centre which provides a one-stop-shop for the development of new battery chemistries to create advanced batteries for the automotive sector.

The National Automotive Innovation Centre is a unique automotive research centre, and the largest facility of its kind in Europe. It will provide high technology automotive manufacturing research that will be of significant benefit in the delivery of the key manufacturing component of the UK’s Industrial Strategy.

Prime Minister and Chancellor of the Exchequer visit WMG

prime_minister_and_chancellor_visit_wmg_university_of_warwick_01_september_2016250.jpgThe University of Warwick was pleased to welcome the Prime Minister, Theresa May MP, and the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Philip Hammond MP, to the University to visit WMG. As part of their IMC tour the Prime Minister and Chancellor were shown one of the world’s most adaptable and advanced driving simulators, the 3xD Simulator.

The 3xD Simulator is the only of its kind designed specifically to test real-world robustness and usability of smart, connected and autonomous vehicle technology and it will be the centre piece of the Virtual Reality Centre in the National Automotive Innovation Centre.

Margot James MP visits WMG

margot_james_mp_and_professor_lord_bhattacharyya_1st_september_2016250.jpgProfessor Lord Bhattacharyya was pleased to welcome Margot James MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State and Minister for Small Business, Consumers and Corporate Responsibility, BEIS, to WMG on the 1 September.

Ms James was keen to hear about the breadth of our research and development, including the WMG centre High Value Manufacturing Catapult, and the impact that this has on the economy. She was also given an overview of our substantial SME programme, working to accelerate productivity and growth in SMEs by applying research-led tools and techniques, building sustainable and collaborative relationships.


Leader of science and innovation in Singapore receives Honorary Doctorate from University of Warwick

mrlim250.jpgThe chairman of Singapore’s leading public sector agency for scientific research, technological development, and economic growth has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Science by the University of Warwick.

Mr Lim Chuan Poh, who was appointed Chairman of The Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) in 2007, received the award with an oration by Professor Lord Bhattacharyya, Chairman of WMG.

Rt Hon Theresa May MP Visits WMG

theresa_may_250.jpgProfessor Lord Bhattacharyya was pleased to welcome The Rt. Hon Theresa May MP, Home Secretary, to WMG on 22 June. Professor Lord Bhattacharyya gave an overview of WMG research and development, and the impact that this has on the economy.

Theresa May, was also introduced to Professor Tim Watson, Director of WMG’s Cyber Security Centre. Professor Watson was able to highlight the work of WMG’s fascinating E-CRIME Project which looks to develop an economic model to measure the impact of cybercrime in various industry sectors, managing and deterring cybercrime as well as the need to develop concrete, sector-specific controls and counter-measures.

Shadow Secretary of State for Education Visits WMG

Ms Powell was interested to learn more about WMG’s education programmes, particularly how it collaborates with industry to deliver these. After meeting with Professor Lord Bhattacharyya, Ms Powell was given a tour of the Group’s R&D facilities. Starting in the International Manufacturing Centre’s Engineering Hall with Professor Jennings, where they discussed WMG’s research into smart and connected vehicles.

Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills offically opens Energy Innovation Centre at WMG

skb-250.jpgThe Rt Hon Sajid Javid MP Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills visited WMG, University of Warwick on Thursday 10th March to formally open the new £50m Energy Innovation Centre, the largest of its kind in Europe.

The Energy Innovation Centre is a centre for world-class innovation for the development of new battery chemistries. It is at the forefront of research, providing guidance and technical know-how in three key areas of Energy Storage; Energy Management; and Complex Electrical Systems.

BIS Director General for Business and Science visits WMG

Mr Davies was interested to learn more about WMG’s research, particularly how it collaborates with industry to create innovative products. After meeting with Professor Lord Bhattacharyya, Mr Davies was given a tour of the Group’s R&D facilities which include the Energy Innovation Centre (EIC).

Professor Lord Bhattacharyya welcomes a delegation from the city of Chongzhou

The delegation, accompanied by the British Consulate in Shanghai, were visiting the Midlands at the invitation of Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council to develop mutually beneficial economic links.The delegation discussed strategic links between Chongzhou and the Midlands with Lord Bhattacharyya prior to discussions on WMG’s research and education programmes supporting Chinese companies and the WMG Academy for Young Engineers.

Ratan Tata and Cyrus Mistry unveil Foundation Stone of £150 million National Automotove Innovation Centre

On Tuesday 17th March, Mr Ratan N. Tata (Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons), Cyrus P. Mistry (Chairman of Tata Group) met with Professor Lord Kumar Bhattacharyya the Chairman and Founder of WMG at the University of Warwick and unveiled the foundation stone of the new £150 million National Automotive Innovation Centre on the campus of the University of Warwick.

Lord Baker takes tour of new WMG Academy for Young Engineers

28 October 2014

The Rt Hon Lord Kenneth Baker, founder of the University Technical College Programme, visited the WMG Academy for Young Engineers in Coventry last week to meet the first cohort of students.

Accompanied by Professor Lord Kumar Bhattacharyya, Lord Baker enjoyed a tour of the new school on Friday 24 October and spoke to staff and students.

The Academy, in Mitchell Avenue, opened its doors for the first time in September 2014 to 230 Year 10 and Year 12 pupils.

WMG welcomes His Excellency Ma Kai Vice Premier of China

On Saturday 13th September, WMG was pleased to welcome His Excellency Ma Kai, Vice Premier of China, along with a delegation of senior officials including Liu Xiaoming, Chinese Ambassador to the UK, and Sir Sebastian Wood, Britain’s Ambassador to China.

Meeting with Professor Lord Bhattacharyya, the Vice Premier and the Ambassadors were interested to understand more about WMG and how the Group develops partnerships with industry and the significant economic benefits of such partnerships. There were also discussions on current WMG collaborations with China and how these can be further developed.

University of Warwick and Carnegie Mellon University take first step to $10 million partnership

16 July 2014

The University of Warwick and Carnegie Mellon University have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to create a $10 million research and education collaboration.

The two universities intend to work together on research and teaching in data acquisition, analysis and processing for next generation applications. This will bring together Warwick’s expertise in manufacturing and digitally enabled healthcare – including: cybersecurity, energy storage, materials and surfaces and robotics with CMU’s expertise in: autonomous systems, cybersecurity, digital healthcare, machine learning and sensing and data processing. Activities will underpin strategic initiatives at the two universities, including Warwick’s Global Research Priorities and CMU’s Brain initiative, City 21 and Traffic 21 initiatives.

WMG hosts Malaysian Investment Development Authority

WMG was pleased to welcome a delegation from the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) on Friday. The delegation was led by The Honorable Dato’ Seri Paduka Mukhriz Tun Dr Mahathir, Chief Minister of Kedah state in Malaysia, and H.E. Dato’ Ahmad Rasidi Hazizi, the Malaysian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.

Former Malaysian Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir bin Mohamad visits WMG

WMG was honoured to host a visit from Tun Dr Mahathir bin Mohamad, former Malaysian Prime Minister, accompanied by Mr Aslam Farikullah, COO Lotus Group and Mr Tajul Zahari Abu Bakar, Director Vehicle Development & Engineering, Proton Holdings Berhad.

WMG signs Memorandum of Understanding with University of Science and Technology Beijing

28 October 2013

Professor Lord Bhattacharyya, Chairman of WMG, at the University of Warwick recently visited the University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB) to sign a Memorandum of Understanding which will create a long-term collaboration partnership in research and knowledge transfer.

The agreement will see both universities working to develop collaborative research and development opportunities, by working with companies, in China, Europe and internationally, as well as national funding bodies. This builds on the existing Ministry of Education of China and State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs ‘Top Overseas Professorship’ of WMG’s Professor Sridhar Seetharaman at USTB, to develop a wide ranging research and knowledge transfer collaboration. There will also be jointly supported doctoral research.

WMG and Jaguar Land Rover take key step to building National Automotive Innovation Centre

28 October 2013

The University of Warwick, WMG and Jaguar Land Rover have agreed, and signed, the Heads of Terms for the construction of the National Automotive Innovation Campus.

The National Automotive Innovation Campus (NAIC) is a unique Research and Development facility for the UK automotive industry. An iconic £100m building will provide an environment that will foster collaboration, cohesion and cross-fertilisation of knowledge. NAIC will provide a national focus for research capability by combining the expertise nationally and internationally from industry, universities, supply chain companies and SMEs. Over 900 staff from academic and industry teams from WMG, Jaguar Land Rover, Tata Motors European Technology Centre and other partners will work collaboratively on research projects to deliver world-class breakthrough products, processes and services.
