Royal Institution Masterclasses 2015

Local schools were invited to nominate two year 9 pupils (1 boy, 1 girl) to attend the Saturday morning Royal Institution Engineering Masterclasses in WMG, at the University of Warwick in the spring term in 2015. These classes concluded on the 14th of March, with an exhibition and celebration for the students who attended the series. Professor Barbara Shollock awarded certificates to the students.

We expect to repeat this event in 2016 and will again invite schools to submit their nominations from September 2015. Demand for these masterclasses is high, and priority will be given to early nominations.

The Series aims to open the eyes of young people to the excitement, beauty and value of engineering, and in turn, inspire the next generation of scientists, mathematicians and engineers.

The Series is hosted by WMG, and delivered by staff and students from WMG and the School of Engineering. Each masterclass focuses on an aspect of modern engineering and is presented by an engineering actively involved in research or working in industry. The classes take the form of interactive workshop sessions.

The dates for the 2015 Series were:
January 24th & 31st, February 7th and 28th, March 7th, 14th.

The 2015 classes sessions:

  • Software and control: Margaret Low (WMG)
  • Intelligent Vehicles: Mark Amor-Segan, Ali Ahmad, Harita Joshi (WMG)
  • Will 3D printing turn you into a designer?: Dr Simon Leigh (School of Engineering)
  • Experiential Engineering: Dr Jamie Mackrill (WMG)
  • Coastal Engineering: Dealing with waves at our coastline - Dr Jonathan Pearson (School of Engineering)
  • The Power of Process: Mairi Macintyre (WMG)
