Biography

Before coming to the University of Warwick as project manager of the ERC Starting Grant DISCONEX research group he has been working as a researcher at the University of Trier in the research project entitled "Linguistic Construals of Social and Economical Crises in Germany from 1973 until today". The project aimed at a detailed investigation of the linguistic construction and discursive negotiation of five "crises" in the public-political discourse as evidenced in the contemporary mass media since 1973. Besides he was responsible for the constitution of a corpus of press texts concerning the reforms of higher educational systems in Germany, France and Britain within the project "Methodologies and Methods of Discourse analysis" (now DiscourseNet). Since 2014 he is the community manager of the interdisciplinary and international discourse research platform discourseanalysis.net.

Ronny Scholz has obtained his PhD in linguistics and sociology from the universities Paris-EST and Magdeburg in 2010. In his PhD project he compared the representations of Europe in German, French and British election manifestos for European elections between 1979 and 2004. In his research he combines quantitative methods with qualitative methods of discourse analyses. His research interest focuses on the legitimation of political decisions in nation states and the European Union. To that end he applies methods of corpus linguistic approaches of discourse analysis based on a pragmatic understanding of meaning. Between 2007 and 2010 he has been teaching in Sociology and European Studies at Magdeburg University.

Ronny Scholz is member of the
French Association for the Study of Political Language (SELP),
Centre d'études des discours, images, textes, écrits et communications (CEDITEC),
the network of discourse researchers DiscourseNet
and the Dresden Center for Digital Linguistics.
