The NEMDA 1991 Census Statistical Paper Series

David Owen

The 1991 Census of Population was highly significant, since it was the first to collect information on the ethnic group of individuals. Since this is the only survey which covers the entire population and all parts of the country, this provides the first definitive and comprehensive data on the ethnic composition of Great Britain (ethnic group data was not collected in Northern Ireland). The Census results have since been used to help measure the extent of economic and social disadvantage faced by ethnic minorities, and to inform ethnic monitoring policies adopted by many organisations in the public and private sectors.

The NEMDA 1991 Census Statistical Paper Series was established in order to help make Census data for ethnic minorities more accessible to potential users of this information. The series aimed to complement the detailed "Ethnic Group and Country of Birth" Topic Report produced by the Census Offices (two volumes, published by HMSO at a cost of £45.40), which contain only the raw Census data, without any interpretation. The NEMDA 1991 Census Statistical Papers are fairly short documents, designed to highlight the key findings of the 1991 Census in a number of important areas, and interpreting patterns revealed by the Census data, with the help of maps and graphics. The prime focus of the reports is on the results for Great Britain and its constituent nations and regions, but data for smaller areas are presented where appropriate. Basic data is also prestented in tabular form, together with information on derived indicators, such as the unemployment rate and standardised long-term limiting illness rate.
