East Midlands

The East Midlands is the second most important region for fashion and textiles, with approximately 7,000 located businesses in the region, employing 55,000 people.

Most fashion and textiles business activities are represented to some extent, but the region is particularly strong in the following:

  • Knitted products
  • Apparel manufacturing
  • Technical textiles (those managed for performance rather than appearance)
  • Dyeing and finishing on a commission basis
  • Footwear manufacturing
  • Wholesale of clothing and footwear
  • Dry cleaning and laundry

Whilst businesses are spread across the region, the main concentrations are in Leicester city, Nottingham and Ashfield. There are also “hot spots” for particular activities, including:

  • Footwear manufacture around Northampton, Kettering and Leicester city
  • Knitting activities around Leicester city, Ashfield, the Amber Valley and Erewash
  • Apparel manufacture in and around Leicester city
