Gender

  • 10.1% of the workforce is female.
  • 27% of the female workforce is in non-manual or off-site roles.
  • Less than 2% of the female workforce is employed in manual trades.
  • The highest levels of women in non-manual trades are in the North West, Yorkshire and the Humber and the South East.
  • Painting and decorating is the craft trade which has the highest representation of women.

Ethnicity

  • 5% of the construction workforce is from a Black Minority Ethnic Group (BME).
  • 4% of the manual workforce and 6% of the non-manual workforce are from a BME Group.
  • 20% of the workforce is in London and 8% in the West Midlands are from a BME Group.
  • Representation of individuals from BME groups amongst professional and office-based roles is higher than that for manual workers.
  • London and the South East have the highest number of migrant workers.

Age

Currently, the construction industry has an age profile that is biased towards the 35-44 age bracket, compared with the UK working population as a whole.

In 1990, 36% of the construction workforce was aged under 30 years and today 25% of the workforce is within this age group. 8% of the workforce is over 60 years, compared to 4% in 1990.

While the increasing age profile is most pronounced in the manual workforce, professional trades (such as architecture, mechanical and civil engineering) could also lose 20% of their workforce to retirement in the next ten years.

Until the recession there had been encouraging signs of growth in the numbers aged 16-24; up by 50% between 2000 and 2008. The increase was due in part to the number of migrant workers joining the construction sector since the entry of A8 countries into the

EEA. Migrant workers have a younger profile than the overall workforce as a whole.

23% of the self-employed workforce is over the age of 55 years, compared to only 16% who are directly employed.
