Sector employment is concentrated in:

  • North West (14%)
  • Yorkshire and the Humber (13%)
  • East Midlands (13%)
  • Scotland (12%)

As a proportion of employment, Yorkshire and the Humber and the North East experienced the greatest employment decline between 2000 and 2007 (-25% each). In terms of employment numbers, Yorkshire and the Humber has suffered the largest job losses; more than 17,000 jobs were lost between 2000 and 2007. Wales has, however, seen a 4% increase in jobs over the same period.

    Sector workplaces are concentrated in: Scotland (13%); North West (13%); Yorkshire and the Humber (11%); and South West (11%). Within Scotland, the majority of workplaces are in the bakery, wholesale of other food (including fish, crustaceans and molluscs), and beverages sub-sectors.
