North East

The North East has 3 police forces that employ approximately 12,000 officers, staff and specials, approximately 5% of the Police service. The three forces are: Cleveland; Durham; and Northumbria.

Within these forces, there is over 200 full-time equivalent forensic staff. Commercial providers in the region include: forensic science Service; Keith Borer Consultants Ltd.; and Scientifics Ltd.

There are 14 Drug Actions Teams, 4 Probation establishments and 11 Youth Offending Teams operating in the region.

The region has 32 Courts, of which 22 Magistrates’ Courts and 10 County Courts. They employ 1,270 full-time equivalent staff.

In the region there are 8 prisons operated by HM Prison Service, which employ approximately 3,490 full-time equivalent staff. There is also 1 privately operated prison.

The North East has 4 fire and rescue services.

The North East has 3 Area Offices, which employ 460 full-time equivalent staff. The three offices are: Cleveland; Durham; and Northumbria.
