Characteristics of selected occupational groups

Heavy Goods Vehicle drivers

There are 309,100 HGV drivers in the UK of which:

  • 1% are female
  • 2% are under 25 years
  • 53% are 45 years and over
  • 2% are from Black Minority Ethnic groups
  • 67% are qualified below S/NVQ Level 2

The highest proportion of HGV drivers is in the West Midlands (12%), North West (12%) and the East of England (12%).

Other goods handling and storage occupations (ie Warehouse operatives)

There are 381,200 people employed in other goods handling and storage occupations, of which:

  • 12% are female
  • 21% are under 25 years
  • 35% are 45 years and over
  • 8% are from Black Minority Ethnic groups
  • 63% are qualified below S/NVQ Level 2

The highest proportion of storage and warehouse managers is in the West Midlands (13%) and South East (13%).

Post worker, mail sorter, messenger or courier occupations

There are 211,600 people employed in post worker, mail sorter, messenger or courier occupations, of which:

  • 19% are female
  • 14% are under 25 years
  • 41% are 45 years and over
  • 9% are from Black Minority Ethnic groups
  • 55% are qualified below S/NVQ Level 2

The highest proportion is in the South East (15%), London (12%) and the North West (12%).

Storage and warehouse managers

There are 77,300 storage and warehouse managers in the sector, of which:

  • 10% are female
  • 3% are under 25 years
  • 41% are 45 years and over
  • 6% are from Black Minority Ethnic groups
  • 38% are qualified below S/NVQ Level 2

The highest proportion is in the South East (13%) and the North West (12%).

Transport and distribution clerks

There are 64,500 transport and distribution clerks in the logistics sector, of which,

  • 40% are female
  • 13% are under 25 years
  • 34% are 45 years and over
  • 7% are from Black Minority Ethnic groups
  • 35% are qualified below S/NVQ Level 2

The highest proportion of clerks is in the South East (15%), London (12%) and the North West (11%).

There are 86,800 transport and distribution managers in the sector, of which:

  • 14% are female
  • 3% are under 25 years
  • 48% are 45 years and over
  • 5% are from Black Minority Ethnic groups
  • 34% are qualified below S/NVQ Level 2

The highest proportion of managers is in the South East (16%), London (12%) and the North West (11%).

There are 199,500 van drivers in the sector, of which:

  • 8% are female
  • 7% are under 25 years
  • 49% are 45 years and over
  • 7% are from Black Minority Ethnic groups
  • 60% are qualified below S/NVQ Level 2
