South West

The South West is known for its strength in animation based largely on the success of Aardman Animations, based in Bristol. There are also a considerable number of smaller animation companies across the region. There are 800 people employed in the industry in the region.

There are around 400 people working in corporate and commercial production industry.

There are nearly 3,000 people working in post production, studio and equipment hire, special effects and outside broadcast in the South West.

Much location filming is undertaken in the region and a number of film festivals take place in the region each year, including Wildscreen, Encounters, the Cornwall Film Festival and the Cheltenham Screenwriters Festival. Around 600 people in the film industry live in the region.

There are many creative, cutting edge interactive media companies in Bristol, Bath, Plymouth and parts of Wiltshire and Gloucestershire, including the E3 Group, Hyperlaunch, Team Rubber and Nameless. There are over 1,800 people working in the industry in the region.

Nearly 5,000 people work in the photo imaging industry in the region and over half of these are photographers. Larger employers in the region include Harrier LLC (Truprint) in Newton Abbot and Tempest in St Ives. Transmedia, an Approved training provider, have a training facility in Bristol to complement their main base in Greenwich.

There are approximately 1,300 people working in the radio industry.

The region has a strong production sector in Specialist Factual and Natural History production, both at BBC Bristol and in the independent production sector. Bristol is an established hub for television production. Two Four, one of the strongest independents outside of London and spanning TV, Interactive and Digital Media and Facilities, is based in Plymouth. There are around 1,800 people employed in the industry.
