Scotland

Scotland has approximately 56,500 passenger transport employees, which accounts for around 2% of jobs in Scotland. The majority of the workforce is employed in the bus, coach and taxi and private hire sub-sectors. Water transport is a significant sub-sector in the Highlands and Islands representing approximately 1,600 employees.

There are 1,700 passenger transport companies operating in the region, but including sole traders this rises to 18,000. 97.7% of companies in the region employ between 1-10 staff.

Workforce statistics:

  • 84% of the workforce is male.
  • 6% of the workforce is under 25 years, 58% aged 25-50 years and 36% aged 50 years and over.
  • 3% of the workforce in the Highlands and Islands has a Black and Minority Ethnic background, compared with 6% across the rest of Scotland.
  • 7% of the workforce has a disability in Highlands and Islands and 1% across the rest of Scotland.
  • 37% of the workforce is in driver/operative occupations.

          Scotland employer statistics:

          • 34% of companies report recruitment difficulties, 31% report generic skill gaps and 5% report technical skill gaps
          • Skills gaps are reported for foreign languages, vehicle engineering and maintenance, and disability awareness.
          • 13% of companies report vacancies and 11% report hard-to-fill vacancies.

                Highland and Island employer statistics:

                • 20% of companies report recruitment difficulties, 47% report generic skill gaps and 37% report technical skill gaps
                • Skills gaps are reported for foreign languages, vehicle engineering and maintenance, and disability awareness.
                • 25% of companies report vacancies and 14% report hard-to-fill vacancies.
