Ethnicity

In the UK, 90% of the sector workforce is white, compared with 89% in the UK economy as a whole. London accounts for the highest proportion of the sector workforce that is non-white (31%). Within the industries:

  • 82% in parking of the workforce is white
  • 90% in housing
  • 95% in property

Age

  • 69% of the sector workforce is aged between 25 and 54.
  • 10% of the sector workforce is aged 16-24, compared with 14% in the UK as a whole
  • 21% is aged over 55 years, compared with 17%
  • The sector workforce in the North East and the East Midlands is younger than is typical across the UK. 14% of employees in the North East and 13% in the East Midlands are aged between 16-24 years.

  • 12% of the workforce in housing report having a disability
  • 12% in facilities management
  • 18% in cleaning and support services
