Admissions Requirements

The entry requirements for the MPhil/PhD in Employment Research for the academic year 2020/2021 are:

  • Applicants must hold, or be expected to achieve, an Upper Second Class Honours degree from a UK University, or the equivalent qualification and grade from a non-UK University.
  • Applicants must have, or be expected to achieve, an English language test certificate that meets our Band B English language requirements: IELTS 7.0 with a maximum of two component scores at 6.0 or 6.5 (or equivalent).
  • You should tell us about your most recent English language test. Please see our Study pages for the English Language qualifications we accept.
  • Two references from Academic staff who have taught you on your current or most recent degree.
The University will accept professional references if you have been out of higher education for over two years. These must be submitted by your current or most recent line manager. Please note that personal references, such as those from family and friends, are not acceptable.
  • Candidates wishing to study for the MPhil/PhD in Employment Research will normally have a Master's degree in a mainstream social science subject. Previous studies should have included training in social science methodology. You should note that the IER has no taught Masters programme, and it is unlikely that we would consider an applicant to our Doctoral Programme unless they hold a taught Masters degree with appropriate research methods components.

Please note that we do not accept overseas research students on a distance-learning basis, and only in very exceptional circumstances would we consider research students from outside the UK who wish to study on a part-time basis.
