Postgraduate Study

Before your submission to IER can be seriously considered you will need to complete a formal application form. If you require some preliminary advice before making a formal submission, you would need to send us a CV and an outline Research Proposal using the IER Guidelines for the preparation of the PhD Research Proposal. This should be sufficiently developed to indicate your knowledge of the topic and your specific area of interest.

It might be helpful for you at this stage to explain some of the basic requirements within which the IER’s PhD Programme is intended to operate. This is so that you can target your efforts in the best possible way and thus avoid wasted time and effort in the applications process.

  • We are not able to take overseas research students on a distance-learning basis, and only in very exceptional circumstances would we consider research students from outside the UK who wish to study on a part-time basis.
  • We would require applicants to the PhD programme to have a Masters degree in a mainstream social science subject.
  • You should note that the Warwick IER has no taught Masters programme, and it is unlikely that we would consider an applicant for a Masters degree by research unless you hold a taught Masters degree with appropriate research methods components.
  • Students are initially registered for the degree of MPhil for the first year of study. Re-grading from MPhil to PhD status and progress to the second year of the Doctoral Programme is dependent upon a formal assessment procedure and presentation of a satisfactory research proposal.
