Admissions Requirements

Please carefully read the information below about entry requirements and supporting documentation before you apply to ensure your application has the best chance for success.

Admissions Requirements

If applying for one of our LLMs, we would normally expect you to have at least an upper second class honours degree in law or its equivalent from your home country. If you hold a good lower second class honours degree or equivalent and practical and/or other relevant experience then you may also be admitted, in appropriate circumstances.

If your first degree is not in law then you may still be admitted, if we are satisfied that you will be able to complete the relevant LLM satisfactorily.

You may find it helpful to check the equivalency of your degree to ensure you meet the requirements for the course you are interested in.

If your first language is not English, you will be expected to obtain one of the following recognised English Language qualifications:

  • IELTS (British Council International Testing System) of at least 7.0 (Band B)
  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) of at least 100 (internet based)
  • PTE score of 70+ overall (no component score below 51)
  • Other accepted tests can be found here

If you do not achieve one of the above scores please send in your certificate anyway. In such cases, the University may recommend that you re-take the test or, that you attend pre-sessional English courses provided by the University, subject to approval from the department. Each case will be assessed individually.

Deadline

The deadline for LLM applications is the 31st July for entry onto the course in September/October of the same year.

Home/EU applications may still be considered after this deadline but there is no guarantee that a decision will be reached before the programme commences. We therefore recommend that you submit an application by the end of July.

We only offer an Autumn intake each year.

Supporting Documents

We encourage you to use our online application form because it is the quickest and most efficient method to apply. If you require a printed copy of the postgraduate application form, please contact our Postgraduate Admissions & Recruitment Officer. There is a non-refundable application fee (details of which can be found on the FAQs page). We cannot consider applications until the application fee has been paid.

We require the following documents with each application:

  • 1 academic reference (unless you have been out of education for over two years in which case a professional reference will be accepted). A further reference may be requested if required.
  • Degree transcripts (originals or attested copies).
  • English language certificate.

In addition to your academic qualifications and experience, course selectors will look for evidence of your interest in the course you are applying for and your understanding of the demands of postgraduate work. Scanned or emailed documents can only be accepted for the purpose of making a decision. If an offer is made, original documents will be required. Applications are normally turned around within 4 to 6 weeks of receipt, providing all documentation required has been provided.
