My Research

My thesis investigates the conflict created through the promotion of preferential trade arrangements (PTAs) within the multilateral trade framework. I am particular interested in the use of North-South PTAs as a development tool and am doing case studies on the US-CAFTA trade agreement and the EU-CARIFORUM Economic Partnership Agreement. Given the asymetric nature of such arrangements as well as their call for co-operation in areas that go beyond agreements at the multilateral level i.e. the WTO plus areas, it is arguable whether these arrangements support national and regional development policies in the less developed partner, and whether these arrangements are conducive to the multilateral process.
