Teaching Allocation
The allocation of teaching is the responsibility of the HoD, assisted by the Teaching Allocation Officer. You should indicate your preferences in the Autumn for the following year.Indicate your Teaching Preferences

Lectures usually begin in week 1 of the term. Seminars usually begin in week 2.

Week 6 of terms 1 & 2 is reading week, when students are free to catch up, read around the subject and start on assessments. No classes for undergraduates may be held in these weeks.

All classes start at 5 minutes past the hour and classes finish at 5 minutes before the hour. Please do not overrun, as students may have another class immediately afterwards and some distance away!

Rescheduling and Cancellations
If you have to reschedule or cancel classes, ensure that the students are given as much notice as possible. Anticipated changes should be mass-mailed to members of the class, and the UG/PG Administrators informed so the room can be released. Last-minute changes should be notified to Reception, who will put up notices on the plasma screen and the relevant class room door. Mass Mailing App

Standard Texts and Reading

The maximum abount of reading which should be set per module per week is 50 pages.

To be certain that students have enough copies of required texts, the law librarian must be informed in plenty of time of any changes to these. We recommend using Talis Aspire to keep your module reading list synchronised with library records.

The University run a number of schemes to support teaching and learning through the Learning Development Centre.

Support for Development

The Teaching Support scheme allows staff to employ a student to help prepare teaching materials, for a maximum of 40 hours in one year. You may only employ students from within the University whom you are neither teaching nor examining in the current year. Please also check with the Finance Office whether the student is eligible to be employed by the University. Application for Student Module Support

Peer Observation

All teaching staff (including part time staff) are expected to participate in peer observation every year as both an observer and an observee to help develop your teaching. It is your responsibility to make pairing arrangements and decide which lecture or seminar will be observed for each of you. If you are already involved in peer observation due to probationary requirements or PCAPP, you need not undertake further observation unless you choose to do so.

Peer observation should involve attendance as a non-participating observer at the agreed class, after which the observer should provide written feedback on the form below (form to be returned to the Deputy Head) as well as arranging a meeting with the observee to discuss issues arising from the observation. Documentation and matters discussed in peer observation will be treated as confidential, unless for PCAPP or probation requirements where disclosure is required. If you want to use the results of your peer observation for eg. promotion, appraisal or probation, you may do so provided you have the permission of the feedback report author.

The Warwick Awards for Teaching Excellence (WATE) recognise and celebrate excellence in teaching and support for learning at Warwick.

Winners each receive £5,000 to further enhance their practice and will receive their awards at the Summer Degree Congregation. Information about WATE

Module Evaluation and Changes
Student Evaluation and Feedback

At the end of your module, you should distribute Student Evaluation Forms to every student. Use student volunteers to collect and return these forms to Reception, and allow time in lectures or seminars for students to complete the form at the start of class. Results will be provided some time later, and a summary should be posted on the module webpages.

You may find it useful to collect informal anonymous feedback for your module half way through the term, in addition to other methods of feedback, in order that we can respond to issues more rapidly. If you would like a 'stop, continue, start' style feedback form on your module website to which you can gain and respond to anonymous feedback, please contact the IT Team.

Annual Module Review

At the end of the academic year, the teaching team on the module should meet to review how the module has been taught and received, including any issues raised by student feedback. A Module Review Form should be submitted to the Director of Undergraduate Studies.

Changes to Modules and New Modules

If you would like to make changes to the front page of your module, or would like to propose a new module please use the form below. This form will then go to the appropriate committee(s) for approval as needed, or minor changes will be implemented ASAP.

Assessment Methods Guidelines

Colleagues are free to choose any assessment method they feel suitable, but the following are recommended guidelines:

30 CAT (full UG) modules

  • 3-hr written exam
  • 2 x 3000 words
  • 1 x 3000 words + 1.5 hr written exam
  • 1 x 2,500 words + 2 hr written exam

15 CAT (half UG) modules

  • 2-hr written exam
  • 1 x 3000 words
  • 1 x 2,500 words plus MCQ or other short test (recorded as coursework)

You may choose the topic of coursework, or let the students choose (subject to your and any external examiners' approval), and students should be informed by the end of Week 5. Ensure that the necessary material is available to students and arrangements are in place for access to scarce resources.

  • Week 5 - Inform students of the essay title or topic
  • Prior to marking - Convenor meets with (or emails) all markers with information on what is expected from each assessed question.
  • Hand in Date (listed on Tabula and available on Student Intranet) - Convenor informs markers which student numbers they are expected to mark. Markers should check they can see all the essays assigned to them for the module. Online marking begins.
  • Convenors should moderate or arrange moderation for the marks on Tabula as soon as practical.
  • Moderated marks and feedback MUST be published to students no later than 20 days after the submission date. Students must be informed that marks are provisional until the external examiners have verified them.
How to Mark Coursework
Marks
Work should be marked in line with the 17-point marking scheme ignoring any content over the assignment word limit. Marks must be entered into Tabula, either on the online marking form for the assignment or by uploading the correct marks spreadsheet from the template created in Tabula. Marks written into the feedback section (either online or uploaded) will not be registered by Tabula. Students should be made aware that their marks are provisional, pending confirmation by the examining board.
Feedback

Feedback should be comprehensive, offering full and constructive criticism of both stylistic and substantive issues, including examples from the text (referencing the page number as appropriate), explanations of the failings and how they might be remedied.

Feedback may be entered directly onto Tabula using the online feedback option (using the Law School Feedback Template as a guideline), or by uploading individual feedback files to Tabula where the filename includes the student ID number.

Convenors should ensure that all feedback meets the Law School standards, and publish all feedback within 20 working days of the deadline date.

Lateness

Work which is late should be marked as normal, then a penalty applied using 'adjustments' in Tabula.

  • 5% per day for UG
  • 3% per day for PG

Note that feedback must still be returned within 20 days of the deadline not when the work was actually handed in.

Cheating / GAP
Please be alert to the possibility of cheating. If you have concerns about an essay you are marking, please contact the module convenor, who will in turn notify the Director of Academic Practice. All students should be aware of the guidelines at GAP Guidelines This page and the more in depth Moodle module are tracked, so we can categorically state when the student last read those guidelines.
Examinations
Course Conventions Setting Exams

If your module is assessed by summer examination, you will be asked for the paper by the week 2 of term 2. For December or January exams, the deadline is week 2 of term 1. All academic staff are expected to participate in exam vetting meetings.

If students are to be barred from answering the same question in their exam as for their assessment, please inform the UG or PG administrator.

Invigilation

All colleagues may be required to undertake inviligation. A rota will be set up for a duty academic to be available for interbal sits on whom the administrative staff can call in cases of emergency.
