Capacity Building

Capacity Building Aims of The Ethiopia Project :

Aim 1: To create and establish within Northern Ethiopia a culture and a centre of excellence in legal research and postgraduate studies in law.

Aim 2: To develop the capacity of Northern Ethiopian law schools to conduct independent LL.M and PhD programmes after the project has come to an end.

The Warwick Capacity Building Ethos: SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT.

The University of Warwick Law School does not believe that one size fits all when it comes to capacity building. So we have worked with the Ethiopian stakeholders to unearth exactly what they want to achieve. We then looked at their resources and how best to utilise them. Then with the Ethiopians stakeholders, created a capacity building strategy that is unique to their needs and wants and one that will lead to real and sustainable results after the Project has come to an end.

The strategy is based on the premise that the best way to impart knowledge is by doing. So in every element of the strategy the Ethiopian stakeholders have had hands on involvement. From constructing academic modules and teaching to undergoing programmes of postgraduate study and being essential parts of the administrative structures and processes. It is a real TEAM EFFORT.

Capacity Building Initiatives

The Capacity Building strategy for the Ethiopia Project has 4 main Components:

  1. Academic
    Developing and running in conjunction with the Ethiopian Stakeholders, LLM and PhD programmes for students based in Ethiopia. While at the same time imparting knowledge and knowhow on matters such as curriculum design , review, validation and implementation, quality controls, quality assessment and the training of academics.
  2. Research and Publication
    Enhancing the research and publication skills and competences, structures and procedures of Mekelle University and the law schools in the Northern Cluster.
  3. Administrative
    Aiding in the implementation of human resource management, organisational resources, student administration and appropriate information technology; and customising academic procedures and standards to meet the demand of postgraduate programmes and research.
  4. Library and Registrar
    Creating and maintaining sound and secure student record keeping, and developing and organising on line and off line library resources. Training Librarian’s in resource access, acquisition and management.
