Research Interests

I have researched and written in the areas of public law (with a specific emphasis on judicial review in the United Kingdom). More recently the emphasis has been on land rights, social movements and aspects of legal change with reference to Brazil. I am indebted to the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and to the Nuffield Foundation for their support in this activity. At present I am completing a monograph on the land question in Brazil which explores relations between the State and the Landless Workers' Movement (Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais (MST)). As well as exploring the impact of the MST in brining about substantive social and legal change, I examine the role played by the Atorney General's department (Ministerio Publico), the Land Agency, (INCRA) and Brazil's federal and State governments. Individuals who are keen to pursue doctoral studies in these or closely related fields are welcome to contact me for an informal discussion.
