Widening Participation Officer (PAIS)

Shahnaz.Akhter.1@warwick.ac.uk

I am a postdoctoral researcher and widening participation officer for the Department of Politics and International Studies

Research

I was awarded an ESRC Impact Innovation Fellowship to focus on the narrative of Muslim women in the UK, examining how they are marginalised using virtual reality, arts and history to uncover missing narratives from history, for which I was awarded an ESRC Impact Innovation Fellowship. I am also a researcher on Co-Power researching the impact of Covid 19 on BAME Communities in Coventry and Leicester.

My PhD focused on Muslim group identity in the UK, using securitisation theory to examine how these groups can be securitised from the government and recreate these processes within their own communities.

Outreach Work

As part of the department's outreach work, I co-founded and coordinate the Colonial Hangover Project which looks at the Hidden Legacies of Empire. Queries regarding the Colonial Hangover Project can be made at colonialhangover@warwick.ac.uk
