The Loss of the USS Cochino

USS Cochino

The USS Cochino was modified for sigint collection activities by the British in Portsmouth in July 1949. The following month she was despatched on an experimental sigint gathering operation close to the Soviet coast. She was lost in after a snorkel leak led to a serious battery fire and several explosions. Most of her crew were rescued by the USS Tusk. Six seamen from the USS Tusk were lost along with Robert Wellington Philo, a civilian signals expert, from the USS Cochino
